Blood in Stool: Why It Should Not Automatically Be Called Piles

Rectal bleeding has several possible causes and deserves assessment when recurrent or significant.

Bright red blood in stool is often attributed to piles, but haemorrhoids are only one possible cause. Anal fissures, inflammation, polyps, infection and other bowel conditions may also cause bleeding.

When bleeding needs urgent care

Heavy bleeding, black tarry stool, dizziness, fainting, marked weakness or bleeding with severe abdominal pain requires urgent medical attention.

Why history and examination matter

The colour and amount of blood, bowel habit changes, age, weight loss, medication use and family history all influence the evaluation.

Will everyone need colonoscopy?

No. The need for colonoscopy depends on the clinical assessment, age, risk profile, associated symptoms and examination findings.
