Acidity & GERD: When Repeated Heartburn Needs Evaluation
Recurrent acidity should not automatically mean indefinite self-medication.
Heartburn, sour regurgitation and upper abdominal discomfort are common. Many episodes are mild and short-lived, but recurrent symptoms may represent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or another upper gastrointestinal problem.
Symptoms that need more attention
Difficulty swallowing, recurrent vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, persistent symptoms despite treatment or new severe chest discomfort need medical assessment.
Why the same medicine is not always the answer
Acid-suppressing medicines can be useful, but repeated unsupervised treatment may delay evaluation of another diagnosis or lead to unnecessary long-term therapy.
When endoscopy may be considered
Endoscopy is not required for every patient with acidity. It may be recommended when alarm symptoms, persistent symptoms or another clinical indication is present.
